Dear Herb,
The Transformation Initiative which was initiated by
National Commercial Bank (NCB), Jamaica in 2002, would
most certainly not have started at all muchless achieved
the success it did without the presence of its primary
driver and owner Herb Phillipps Jr.
Herb, at that time, was a member of the board of directors
with responsibility and role of Director of Transformation
Initiative, while I was the Regional Manager responsible
for the NCB account at Infosys Technologies Limited.
Herb recognized that a transformation of this nature,
involving NCB's entire core technology infrastructure,
was not a technology project but was to be driven by
the business heads rather than IT. This was a key element
for the success of the project which included changing
out many legacy systems such as the Core banking applications
and the implementation of a new Internet banking system;
a first in the region. This "big bang, go live"
implementation was achieved in an unprecedented time
of 7 months.
Herb was at the centre of it all for NCB, leading this
Phase-1 implementation of Finacle Core banking solution.
In the ensuing months he continued to power forward
with other phases of implementations such as Retail
Internet banking, Alert server, Treasury solution, CRM,
etc. At Infosys, called him "The Impediment Remover"
as one could go to him with any complex issue and he
provided timely resolutions,(some in an astonishing
time of less than 24 hours). This was achieved by assembling
all the stake holders, be it business, technology and
or other supply partners, so that we (Infosys and NCB)
could debate, decide and implement solutions (without
the unending intellectual and theoretical discussion
some topics could get into), thus moving the project
forward.
I would like to end this tribute by stating that no
project of any decent complexity can do without the
services of Herb and indeed HIPNET. His positive presence
and the dynamic active role that he plays coupled with
his stupendous energy, experience and capability in
banking makes Herb a "must have leader" if
one wants great control, risk mitigation and high success
for any mission critical transformation projects.
I would highly recommend HIPNET and I am sure you would
thank me for this recommendation once you've engaged
their services.
